Elevation of Brain Magnesium with Swiss Chard and Buckwheat Extracts
About this PDF
As part of the Research Spotlight series on WholisticMatters, “Elevation of brain magnesium with Swiss chard and buckwheat extracts in an animal model of reduced magnesium dietary intake” summarizes results from an original research study investigating the use of a plant-based magnesium supplement.
Approximately 45 percent of adults in the United States are magnesium deficient, putting them at risk for anxiety and neurological disorders. Unfortunately, dietary supplements for magnesium often are in the form of magnesium salts, which offer poor bioavailability to the central nervous system.
Using an animal model of magnesium deficiency, researchers found that a short-term, moderate reduction in dietary magnesium, similar to consumption in the U.S., resulted in decreased magnesium concentrations in the brain.
Supplementation with a Swiss chard and buckwheat extract led to a significant increase in brain magnesium, however most of the magnesium salt supplements did not result in a significant change in brain magnesium concentration.
