In a recent issue of the peer-reviewed journal HerbalGram published by the American Botanical Council (ABC), authors discuss a long-term solution for the United States cannabis industry to enter into the global market. Authors propose that cannabis, currently a federally scheduled material, be removed from the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and its federal oversight to be reassigned to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) instead of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
This new regulatory framework would treat cannabis as a “cash crop similar to hops,” allowing the United States state-led regulated hemp and cannabis industry, valued at more than 10 billion dollars, to flourish.
