Research Spotlight

Background: Detoxification from Toxin Exposure

The body is exposed to a variety of endogenous and environmental toxins on a daily basis. If they are not cleared properly, they can accumulate and contribute to the development and progression of several diseases.

The body’s natural detoxification mechanism is a metabolically demanding process, and several plant-based foods have been found to help support these pathways. A plant-based supplement was designed to include these research-backed ingredients with the goal of enhancing detoxification in the body and improving downstream measures of health.

Research Question: Can a plant-based dietary supplement effectively enhance detoxification?

Detoxification may be enhanced by the consumption of cofactors and bioactive compounds that provide enzymatic support to the detoxification processes. Supplements that provide this targeted detoxification support may be beneficial for patients looking to support the body’s natural detoxification mechanisms and prevent/reduce/something like that unwanted symptoms of a high toxin load.

Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification pathway

Research Methods: Randomized, Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial

Healthy adults (n=40) were assigned to consume the plant-based dietary supplement or a placebo product for 28 days. Measures were taken at baseline (day 1), post-treatment (day 28), and follow-up (day 42). Both groups also followed dietary and lifestyle guidelines during the four-week intervention which included increasing water intake, incorporating exercise into daily routine, and reducing unnecessary chemical exposures in the home environment. At each visit, patients completed questionnaires related to metabolic health, emotional well-being, and sleep quality. Other clinical evaluations included anthropometric measures, vital signs, urine markers of detoxification and mutagenicity, blood methylation panel, and red blood cell (RBC) minerals, including heavy metals.

Clinical Trial Results: Plant-Based Supplement Provide Detoxification Support

Consumption of the plant-based supplement designed to provide detoxification support resulted in significant improvements in:

  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Emotional health
  • Toxin burden
  • Urine porphyrins (a marker of toxin load) among those with high baseline levels
  • RBC toxic metals
RBC toxic metals
Consumption of a plant-based detoxification supplement led to a significant change from baseline in RBC toxic metals (sum of RBC levels of arsenic, cadmium, cesium, chromium, lead, mercury, and thallium)
RBC levels of lead
Consumption of a plant-based detoxification supplement resulted in a significant decrease in levels of lead in red blood cells after four weeks.
RBC mercury
Consumption of a plant-based detoxification supplement resulted in a significant decrease in levels of mercury in red blood cells after four weeks.

Research Conclusion

Consumption of a plant-based dietary supplement designed to support the body’s natural detoxification processes resulted in clinically meaningful and beneficial effects on quality of life and biomarkers of metabolic detoxification.
