Guided Metabolic Detoxification Program Supports Phase II Detoxification Enzymes and Antioxidant Balance in Healthy Participants

As part of the Research Spotlight series on WholisticMatters, “Guided metabolic detoxification program supports Phase II detoxification enzymes and antioxidant balance in healthy participants” explores the effects of consuming a whole food-based nutritional supplement as part of a four week guided metabolic detoxification program. Appropriate detoxification of harmful compounds is vital to human health. Toxin exposure is a part of everyday life- from the environment and air to the food supply. The body has a three-step process for eliminating toxic compounds; however, it is possible that toxin burden can overload the body’s natural mechanisms. Impaired clearance of toxins from the body or elevated, chronic exposure can directly contribute to disease development, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive conditions, and reproductive concerns. Some whole foods help with detoxification by stimulating detoxification enzymes or working as antioxidant to neutralize radical compounds generated as part of the detoxification process, including cruciferous vegetables, Spanish black radish, and select herbs.

Using a randomized, controlled trial, researchers investigated the effects of consuming a whole food-based, nutritional supplement as part of a detoxification program. After four weeks, participants demonstrated improvement in  plasma antioxidant activity and oxidative stress  which could be due to an increase in the activity of phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes. Together, these results indicate that a whole food-based nutritional supplement can enhance the body’s natural antioxidant pathways that are crucial to healthy detoxification.
